Dr. Sara Ancello, DO is a Board-Certified Gastroenterologist and Obesity Medicine Specialist. She earned her medical degree from Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency as Chief Resident at Rowan University. She then moved to Arizona to complete her Fellowship in Gastroenterology through Midwestern University at Mountain Vista Medical Center, where she led her colleagues as Chief Fellow for two years. Dr. John Ashurst DO, MSc, FACEP, FACOEP is an emergency physician, educator, and researcher at Kingman Regional Medical Center. Having a keen interest in population health and clinical research, he received a Master of Science with a focus on Clinical Research from PCOM during residency. Since graduation, he has published more than 100 manuscripts, served on numerous journal editorial boards, and has led journal clubs at the local, regional, national, and international level. Dr. Barnett-Trapp is a second-generation osteopathic family physician. She completed a family medicine residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and stayed on as faculty providing full-spectrum family medicine care, including hospital and obstetrical services. Dr. Barnett-Trapp completed a fellowship in academic medicine through the University of Arizona and has a passion for medical education. She recently switched from graduate medical education to undergraduate medical education working at Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine as a clinical assistant professor in the department of osteopathic family and community medicine. Dr. Michael Bays graduated from A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) in 1990. He completed his residency training in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Metro Health Center in Eerie, PA in 1995. Jason Haxton, MA, DO (h.c.) has been the director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine since January 2001. Besides managing the Museum that was created in 1934, he makes multiple international trips each year and during COVID he visits by ZOOM as an addition to many osteopathic online curriculums. Sue is a senior risk management consultant for the Mutual Insurance Company of Arizona (MICA) risk management services department Sue has worked in the health care field for over 20 years as a Health Care Risk Management/Patient Safety Specialist, researcher, and educator. Dr. Keane was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. In 1994, Dr. Keane moved to Arizona to pursue a career in writing. He instead was drawn into the field of education and policy, at first working at Arizona State University and receiving a master’s degree in higher education. Dr. Keane later served on the research staff for the Arizona State Senate and then briefly as a lobbyist for Arizona’s cities and towns. An interest in traditional Chinese medicine, nutrition and other health related activities eventually led him to leave public policy to attend medical school.

Karen J. Nichols, DO, MA, MACOI, CS is most recently the Dean of the Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine serving since 2002 until stepping down July 2018. She took a leave to serve as President of the American Osteopathic Association 2010-2011. Prior to serving as Dean, she was Assistant Dean, Post-Doctoral Education and Division Director (chair), Internal Medicine at the Midwestern University/Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine since 1997. She was in the private practice of internal medicine and geriatrics in Mesa, Arizona from 1985 through 2002. A graduate of the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM) with a DO degree, she holds a Master’s degree in Management with a specialty in Healthcare Administration from Central Michigan University. In 2015, she was selected for the highest honor given by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the Distinguished Service Award as well as receiving a Presidential Citation in 2018. In 2015, she received the Robert A. Kistner, DO Award and then in 2020, received the Dale Dodson, DO Award, the two highest honors bestowed by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. She has received numerous other awards.
She has served as President of the American Osteopathic Association, President of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association and President of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and was the first woman to hold all those positions. She is Past President of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago Board of Governors. Dr. Nichols is one of the two first DOs nominated by the AOA and elected to the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education board. She is the Chair of that board and serves on the Executive Committee and Policy Committee.

By invitation she frequently speaks nationally on leadership, end-of-life care and outreach issues for osteopathic medicine. She is also authoring a book on Leadership for Physicians.
In 2004 Dr. Nichols created the endowed Costin Institute for Osteopathic Medical Educators, sited at Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, a one-year hybrid fellowship which has graduated over 300 medical educators. Dr. Ariana Peters graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003. She completed her residency in internal medicine in 2007 at Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan and has worked as a hospitalist since that time. Dr. Elaina Pirruccello, DO, is a Pathology specialist in Flagstaff, Arizona. She attended and graduated from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010. She completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. Raney received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona and
then completed postgraduate residency training in primary care at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, Virginia. She is currently a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy in Glendale, Arizona. She practiced as a clinical pharmacist in the Midwestern University Family Medicine Clinic, providing collaborative disease management services for patients with chronic cardiometabolic conditions for 15 years. Her primary teaching responsibilities and clinical interests are in the areas of endocrinology, with an emphasis on diabetes and women’s health. Christine Saraceni, DO, MS attended medical school at Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. She graduated in the class of 2009. She also obtained a Masters degree in microbiology at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated in 2004.She completed her osteopathic internship at Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida and graduated in the class of 2010. She did her internal medicine residency and hematology oncology fellowship training at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA where she served as the chief hematology oncology fellow. Dr. Stiegler is a 5th generation Arizona native who completed her medical training at Midwestern University College of Medicine in 2006. Dr. Stiegler had the opportunity to participate in a pre-doctoral teaching fellowship in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and continues to utilize hands-on techniques in her comprehensive approach to patient care. After completing her residency training in internal medicine at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Dr. Stiegler served as chief resident in 2009-2010, and then joined BGSMC faculty as a teaching attending on the Academic Medical Service. In 2014, Dr. Stiegler completed a fellowship in Palliative Medicine and joined the Palliative Medicine team to work as a full-time palliative care physician.
Dr. Stiegler has special interest in biomedical ethics, healthcare equity and outreach for marginalized populations, and in physician education on the care of the terminally ill patient. She is a member of the Northern Arizona Healthcare Ethics Committee and Provider Group Advisory Council, and an Associate Professor in the department of Internal Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Dr. Chad Taylor was raised in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. He received his undergraduate education at Minnesota State University and graduated in 2009. Subsequently, Dr. Taylor pursued his doctorate in osteopathic medicine at A.T. Still School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and graduated in 2013. Dr. Taylor’s passion was rural family medicine and hospitalist medicine. However, after completing his family medicine residency program in 2016, he was recruited by a dermatology practice, Mohave Skin and Cancer Clinic, in Kingman, AZ. He became a partner until the practice was sold in 2021. Dr. Taylor then returned to the only place that has felt like home, Flagstaff, AZ. Maritza Valenzuela oversees ADHS’ Office of Injury and Violence Prevention, which includes injury prevention, sexual violence prevention, domestic violence services, suicide prevention, and opioid response and prevention programs. A fifth-generation Arizonan, she discovered a passion for public health while conducting HIV testing and education across Phoenix with Terros. Ms. Valenzuela received a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and has more than 14 years of experience advancing innovative and data-driven programs in national, state, and local public health agencies. Before returning to Arizona in 2021, Ms. Valenzuela provided leadership on local youth health initiatives at the Public Health Institute at Denver Health (formerly Denver Public Health), including facilitating youth-adult partnerships in the workplace, leading a cross-sector collaboration on youth violence prevention, initiating linkages to clinical and hospital-based programs, and creating innovative processes for the 2017 Denver Youth Health Assessment and 2019 report How Gun Violence Affects Youth in Denver.

Dr. Anthony Will is an osteopathic physician that is board certified in both Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix.
