Dr. Ambrosia is an interventional cardiologist who graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific after completing his undergraduate degree in engineering at Arizona State University. An Arizona resident since 1976, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiology at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix. Beginning practice in Mesa in 1998, he originally practiced at Mesa General Hospital and moved his practice to the Banner Heart Hospital when it opened in 2000. A founding member of his current group, CardioVascular Associates of Mesa, he specializes in interventional and structural heart procedures and was involved in the development of many of the interventional and structural heart procedures at Banner Heart Hospital.
Dr. Ambrosia currently serves as the President of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association (AOMA).
Mark Boesen is a founding partner at Boesen & Snow Law and the President of HPA Associates (a professional consulting firm). Before establishing the firm, Mark served as the Chairman & CEO of GenRx Pharmacy. Mark’s career also includes service to several pharmaceutical manufacturers, law firms, and pharmacy providers, including: Associate Director of Government Affairs at Alkermes Pharmaceuticals, Associate Attorney at the law firm Quarles & Brady, and VP of Operations and Compliance Officer at Avella Specialty Pharmacy. Mark is also an accomplished association management professional and political advocate with service as Director of Government Affairs at the American Health Quality Association, Director of Government Affairs at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the Executive Director of the Maine Association of Substance Abuse Programs. Mark began his professional career in the office of United States Senator John McCain.
Lynn is a marketing specialist for the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program at the Arizona Board of Pharmacy. He understands the important role the tool plays in public safety and in the fight against the Opioid Overdose Epidemic. He educates with groups across the state, including state and county agencies, law enforcement, and educational institutions. His experience includes work in advertising and the insurance industry in roles as instructor/coach, media producer, and technical specialist.
Devin DeFendis is currently the Director of Advocacy and Training at Sojourner Center and was previously Sojourner Center’s Director of Programs. Devin has a bachelor’s degree in communication and a minor in Women and Gender Studies from Arizona State University. Devin completed her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Southern California. Devin has advocacy, case management, and program management experience at a variety of nonprofits working with diverse populations. Populations include homeless youth, refugees, survivors of domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking victims, and older isolated adults. Devin also has experience working as a Community Development Director overseeing donor manager, marketing, volunteer, and internship programs, events, and grants. In her current role, Devin has been responsible for strengthening and creating trauma-informed services to support participants in achieving goals tied to safety, self-sufficiency, and personal empowerment.
Dr. Desai is an interventional cardiologist specializing in coronary artery disease, complex coronary interventions including atherectomy, trans-radial interventions, valvular heart disease, echocardiography, trans-esophageal echocardiography, treatment of heart disease.
Dr. Desai is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. He received his osteopathic medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr Desai currently practices with Cardiovascular Associates of Mesa.

A native of Boston, MA, Gary graduated from Northwestern University with a BS in Communication Studies in 1992. Gary was an OMM scholar during his undergraduate years and graduated with honors in 2009. He is a graduate of MWU-AZCOM in 2009 and the NMM/OMM Residency Program at St Barnabas Hospital in 2012. He became Program Director of the ONMM3 Residency in 2021 and has been working with resident and medical student education at Midwestern University and Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine since 2012. His professional experience includes designing the current residency curriculum and participating as residency faculty for over 12 years. Dr. Gailius has practiced OMM at the MWU multispecialty clinic since 2012, focusing on cranial osteopathy, prolotherapy/PRP, sports medicine, and OMM for newborns and children.
Dr. Elissa B. Gartenberg is a board-certified family medicine physician and founder of Modern Family Medicine, a concierge medical practice in Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona, that blends conventional primary care with holistic care. She incorporates osteopathic manipulation, medical acupuncture, and functional lifestyle medicine into her practice. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan, pursued advanced studies in molecular biology at Harvard University, and received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her internship with Henry Ford Health Systems in Warren and Detroit, Michigan, and her family medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. She also holds certification in medical acupuncture through the Helms Medical Institute at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.
Dr. Gartenberg established and operated a traditional insurance-based family medicine practice for 10 years before transitioning to a concierge model that supports longer visits, deeper clinical engagement, and the full application of osteopathic principles. Her work integrates manual therapy, mind-body strategies, preventive care, and advances in AI and biometric technology to deliver highly personalized, precision-informed treatment plans. Her practice design enables extended visits, fosters stronger clinical relationships, and promotes ongoing continuity.
Dr. Carsten R. Hamann, MD, PhD, is a board-certified dermatologist and director of clinical research at Saguaro Dermatology Associates in Phoenix, Arizona. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine and core faculty at the HonorHealth Dermatology Residency Program in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Dr. Hamann holds a Medical Degree from Loma Linda University and a PhD. in Public Health and Epidemiology from the University of Copenhagen. With over 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals, his research focuses on allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and the advancement of dermatologic education. In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Hamann is passionate about mentoring future physicians and improving patient care through innovative dermatologic practices.
Patrick W. Hogan, DO is a double-certified in Pain Management and Anesthesiology specialist (American Board of Anesthesiology). Dr. Hogan and his business partner, Dr. Tristan Pico, MD founded a large multidisciplinary pain management practice in the Phoenix Metro area called “AZ Pain Doctors”. They have 9 locations valley-wide.
Dr. Hogan primarily focuses on interventional pain management techniques, but his practice offers a full spectrum of acute and chronic pain management, including medication management.
Dr. Hogan completed medical school at Midwestern University/AZ College of Osteopathic Medicine, and then completed residency and pain management fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Dr. Hogan is married with 3 children and enjoys quiet time on the beach and skiing with his children.
Dr. Horlick is a Board-Certified Pediatrician with over 25 years of experience in the Phoenix area. After relocating to Arizona from central Illinois, Dr. Horlick attended the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Since returning to Arizona in 1999, she has been dedicated to providing high-quality pediatric care and has recently joined Midwestern University as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in January 2025.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Horlick is deeply passionate about preventive medicine and its ability to empower families to live healthier lives. She has a particular interest in nutrition, fitness and eating disorders, areas she believes are vital in combating the current obesity epidemic. To expand her expertise, she joined the Phoenix Children’s Hospital CARE team, where she honed her skills in caring for children and adolescents affected by obesity and its related conditions. In 2022, Dr. Horlick furthered her commitment to this field by attaining Board Certification in Obesity Medicine, and she aims to contribute to the growth of a Pediatric Obesity Program at Midwestern University.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Horlick enjoys an active lifestyle, including yoga, Peloton cycling, and healthy cooking. She values spending time with her family and lives in the Phoenix area with her husband, Mitch, and their two children, who are currently in college.
Wendy Huang, MD is a board-certified Ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in adult and pediatric eye diseases. She graduated in 2003 from the University of Chicago with a degree in Biology, where she was awarded a Howard Hughes fellowship in research. She attended medical school at Rush University in Chicago in 2008 and went on to complete ophthalmology residency at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in 2012. She specialized in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult strabismus at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the Doheny Eye Institute/USC in 2012. After a decade in practice, she obtained further expertise and completed a fellowship in Uveitis and Cornea and External Disease at The University of California, Irvine-Gavin Herbert Eye Institute in 2023. Her focus is on ocular inflammatory disorders, cornea, and complex pediatric eye diseases, including pediatric uveitis.
Affiliations and Memberships
Dr. Huang is an Associate Professor at Midwestern University and is on faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. She has memberships in the following national organizations: American Board of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Cornea Society, and American Society of Cornea and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Bell is a board-certified osteopathic obstetrician-gynecologist with over three decades of clinical, academic, and administrative leadership. She currently serves as Associate Clinical Professor at Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she is a co-course director for the second year Osteopathic Principles and Practice curriculum and mentors third- and fourth-year medical students in integrative women's health and GME for OB GYN residency.
A Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Bell has held key roles including Chief Medical Officer, Associate Dean, and Chair of Specialty Medicine. Her expertise spans high-risk obstetrics, hospitalist care, curriculum development, and strategic planning. She is a published contributor to national osteopathic education standards and a frequent presenter on OMM applications in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Bell’s recent practice integrates osteopathic manual medicine with OB/GYN care at Mountain Park Health Center and Midwestern Multispecialty Clinic. She is committed to advancing whole-person healing and bridging evidence-based innovation with osteopathic tradition.
Dr. Gary Kirkilas is a general pediatrician at Phoenix Children’s Hospital with a unique practice. His office is a 35-foot mobile medical unit that travels to various homeless shelters in Phoenix providing free medical care to families and teens, as part of Phoenix Children’s Homeless Youth Outreach program. He also serves as a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, giving commentary on trending pediatric issues in the media. As a spokesperson, he is often called to speak on the effects of cannabis advertising on children and has written extensively on the topic. He has worked alongside legislators in several states in their attempt to restrict cannabis advertising that targets children.
He and his lovely wife have four wonderful (most of the time) children and one dachshund.
Machrina Leach has developed strategic operations at the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, enhancing community health through innovative immunization campaigns. Her collaboration skills and clinical judgment have significantly improved vaccination outreach, demonstrating a blend of leadership and licensed nursing expertise. She has directed strategic operations for immunization campaigns and education-centric healthcare programs and collaborated with private medical providers, federally qualified healthcare facilities, and public health. Managed large-scale immunization clinics and outreach initiatives operated by nurses. Facilitated collaboration with partners to deliver statewide immunization education. Executed strategic deployment of VFC initiative.
Managed team operations with strong leadership skills. Implemented response strategies during outbreaks and pandemics. Currently, in her role with The Immunization Partnership for Immunizations (TAPI), she continues to educate and advocate for immunizations for children and adults.
Dr. Michael McBride is a board-certified dermatologist with extensive training and experience in both clinical practice and dermatologic research. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he also served as Clinical Campus Representative. Dr. McBride completed his dermatology residency at HonorHealth in Phoenix, where he was recognized as Chief Resident and contributed to several program initiatives. His clinical expertise encompasses a broad range of dermatologic conditions, including skin cancers, inflammatory skin diseases, and advanced procedural dermatology.
Dr. McBride is also dedicated to advancing the field of dermatology through research, with a focus on innovative treatments and clinical outcomes. His research experience includes contributions to studies on cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, pediatric inflammatory bowel disease, and energy-based dermatologic treatments. In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. McBride is passionate about medical education, regularly delivering lectures and presentations at national conferences. He is also a recognized leader, having been selected for the prestigious AAD Leadership Forum, further emphasizing his commitment to both personal and professional growth in the field of dermatology.
Cynthia (Cindy) Penkala, CMM, CMPE is the Senior Director of the Physician Services Department at the AOA. In her role, she provides and oversees guidance to AOA Affiliates, osteopathic physicians, and their practices on issues impacting the daily operations of the medical practice. She raises awareness of issues that may impact osteopathic physicians and their practices and administers the development of member education to assist physicians. With over 40 years of working in the healthcare industry, including 16+ years of medical association experience, 18 + years managing physician practices, owning her own billing and consulting service, and an additional 10 years working in the medical field in general, Cindy uses her versatile skill set to help physicians and their practices be successful. She achieves this through a continual focus on service offerings, investigation, education, process improvement, and a solid background in healthcare services, organizational management, medical billing, and personnel recruitment. Her drive is fueled by her passion to make sure physicians have a choice between becoming employed and remaining independent.
Kristin Penunuri, JD is a legal risk management consultant at the Mutual Insurance Company of Arizona (MICA). Kristin is an attorney with over a decade of legal experience, including a background in medical malpractice litigation. This litigation background informs her practical, prevention-focused approach to risk management. She also served as Associate General Counsel at the Arizona Department of Economic Security, where she gained valuable insight into regulatory frameworks and public sector legal operations. At MICA, Kristin helps health care teams stay informed and prepared in an evolving legal landscape. Kristin regularly authors articles for MICA on topics such as patient confidentiality, regulatory compliance, and physician liability. In her free time, Kristin enjoys Orangetheory Fitness and spending time with her kids and family.
Deborah Jane Power, DO is a native of San Pedro, California and has been practicing medicine in Arizona for over 22 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master of Science in Exercise and Sport Sciences at The University of Arizona. She earned her D.O. degree in 1997 at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, Missouri and interned at Midwestern University/Arizona Graduate Medical Education Consortium at Tucson General Hospital. Dr. Power completed her rheumatology fellowship at the University of Arizona in 2002 where she held a faculty position for three years before starting a group practice in rheumatology in Tucson, Arizona.
Dr. Power is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists as well as the American College of Rheumatology. She has served as faculty for the Pediatric residency at Tucson Hospitals Medical Education Program, Tucson Medical Center since July 2019.
She has participated as an investigator in over 70 clinical trials and has presented both nationally and internationally.
John F. Prater, DO developed his interest in medicine while serving as a corpsman with the United States Navy and Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict.
Following his military service, he attended undergraduate and graduate school at the University of Akron and subsequently enrolled in medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Completing his rotation in medicine at Brentwood Hospital, he went on to finish a fellowship in psychiatry at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, establishing a private practice in Ft Myers, Florida, in 1985.
For the majority of his professional career, he practiced psychiatry in Florida, where he held multiple administrative roles, conducted clinical research, served in leadership positions, and instructed students and resident physicians, as well as practicing physicians. He is board-certified and is a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychiatry.
Dr. Prater is the father of four sons and stepfather of three daughters and resides with his wife Lee Ann Kelley (also a psychiatrist) in Phoenix.
Dr. Tandon is an Interventional Cardiologist at Cardiovascular Associates of Mesa, where he serves as one of the Interventionalists.
He earned his medical degree from St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies. He completed residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut. He then went on to be Chief Internal Medicine Resident at the University of Arizona — Phoenix. He completed his cardiovascular disease fellowship at the University of Arizona - Phoenix, along with his fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, where he served as Chief Fellow. He remains a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Tandon is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology as well as Adult Echocardiography.
His clinical and research interests have included topics in structural heart interventions, advanced heart failure therapies, electrophysiology, and socioeconomic disparities in cardiovascular disease.
In 2022, he was one of the top 10% cited clinicians. He has presented at numerous professional societies, including the American College of Cardiology, CHEST, and American Thoracic Society.
Dr. Wendt earned a PhD in microbiology & immunology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee. She completed residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In private practice since 2005, Dr. Wendt has been involved in research and patient care and is one of the valley’s “Top Docs”. Dr. Wendt is the Past-President of the Arizona Allergy & Asthma Society.
A native of Chicago, Dr. Wendt enjoys spending time with her family, fencing, and hiking in Sedona.
Dr. Anthony Will is an osteopathic physician that is board certified in both Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix. He has served in various leadership roles including Department Chairman of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University and Vice Chairman of the Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles and Practice for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.
He has previously served as Senior Medical Director for Village Medical in Phoenix.
Dr. Will is Associate Chief Medical Officer for Primary Care at Honor Health.
Dr. Will completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and completed both his medical school and residency training at Midwestern University.

Attestation Instructions
To receive continuing medical education credits for the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association's (AOMA) 45th Annual Fall Seminar, you MUST complete the online attestation and evaluation form for the hours attended by December 31, 2025.
Follow the steps below to complete your attestation:
Log into your account on our website, azosteo.org.
In the upper right corner, click on sign in or, if it has your name, click on your name.

On your main account page, click the My List Tab, find the AOMA 45th Annual Fall Seminar.

Click the gold certificate button.

Then Click on Affidavit

Read the disclosures and click I agree.

Click on Customer Attendance Confirmation.

You must attest to each lecture you viewed to receive credit. Make sure you scroll to the bottom and click on submit before closing.

If you do not check all the lectures viewed at one time, when you return to check the remaining lectures, you will need to click on the edit button.

Each lecture you clicked on will then appear below. You must click on each individual lecture and click on attended or did not attend. There are additional questions you can answer. They are not mandatory, but we appreciate the feedback. Be sure to scroll to the bottom and click Submit.

After attesting to the individual lectures, you must complete the Overall Activity Evaluation to print or email your CME certificate.

After completing the Customer Attendance Confirmation and the AOMA 45th Annual Fall Seminar Overall Activity Evaluation, you may then print or email your CME certificate. Please be sure to check your CME certificate to make sure the hours are correct.

To avoid additional fees for the issuance of CME credits for the AOMA 45th Annual Fall Seminar, all attestation forms MUST be completed by December 31, 2025. After this date, online access to the attestation forms will be closed and requests for CME credits from the AOMA 45th Annual Fall Seminar will be subject to a $25 fee.
There are four Opioid Credits available. I will email you a separate Opioid CME certificate in January 2026. If you need it before that, please let me know.
AOMA will report credits to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) by January 9, 2026, if not sooner.
